When we first covered Sheven on here nearly 3 years ago , I had a feeling he was going to be a stand out artist in the KC market. Fast forward to today and his new single Powerlines not only features Strange Music boss himself Tech N9ne, it’s already ran up over 100k streams.
We caught up with the multi-talented Kansas City creator to talk more about how this record came to fruition.
When I saw you announce a song called Powerlines coming out with Tech I imagined a ‘club banger anthem’ - but when I heard the song it was much different than what expected. Where did the inspiration for this song come from?
I went thru a rough time relationship wise and this song along with a couple unreleased joints I got really healed me. I was actually gonna drop this song last year but I played it for Tech at his house and he said "u can't release that i need on that it’s a hit”.
Were you expecting the song to crack 100k streams so quickly? How’s that feel?
Not at all my highest streamed song is 10k and video at 22k never thought I would fo 100k before the first week expecially with no push the release date messed up and the song released 3 weeks early marketing and all that is all planned around August 23rd.
I’ve seen quite a few locals collaborate with Tech in the past, but very few get the support from him like you’re getting (posts on IG \ photos \ videos etc). Do you envision working more with Tech or Strange Music?
Forsure!! U hear alot of good and bad things being a musician about Strange and in my opinion they have been more than fair!!! Practically walked me thru the process of paper work and asked for almost nothing!!!
So i think so.
It looks like everyone involved from the production to the artwork on the song has ties to KC. What makes it important to keep things tied back to the city?
This song is close to me and everybody I worked with is as well it only felt like the right way to do it down to the shirt I wore in the video everything is KC we even shot in Industry Soundz studio. No matter where i go i wanna stay in touch with the City!
So, when should we expect the video? Can you say who’s directing it?
With the early release it has thrown a bit of panic right now but as of today it will be the same man who did the recipe video Mike Beak.
What’s next? Should we anticipate an album soon?
Droppin singles for the rest of the year next release is Sept 6th. They were written as a album they all blend but due to the nature of the business and how things have changed I’m releasing singles!
