It has been a while since we've attended a show, being busy with all this corporate work, but when I was invited to a Nujabes tribute show I made sure to make time for a trip to recordBar. With opening sets from an all star line up of local talent including Rick Maun, Ish1da, Scotty Wu, SK, and Domineko - the Nakama Music Group put on plenty of entertainment for everyone. People funneled into the venue on a Monday night to celebrate the Naka-Kon sponsored anime themed show. At one point a member from Naka-Kon even gave away passes to the popular anime convention in Kansas City.
The headlining act was Tokyo born hip hop artist Shing02, who has spent much of his career performing across the globe. I saw him come in alongside his entourage packing luggage bags and instruments. Accompanied by his band The Cheehoos on stage, they played a beautiful set covering some of Nujabes most known pieces.
A highly influential musician, Nujabes was a Japanese bred music producer who was known for his soulful, jazzy sounds that still get streams today. His life was cut short when he was involved in a traffic accident in 2010. It is common to see an image of him beside J Dilla in February, a month we mourn the loss of two incredible musicians who left us too soon.
I could go on writing, but the gallery and video below should recap this event better than my words could. Many thanks to Nakama Music Group for having us out, be sure to lookout for their future shows around Kansas City.
